Both parents are required to provide financial support to their children after divorce. Maryland courts may also provide alimony in certain circumstances. The law firm of Haley-Pierson Law assists clients in suburban Washington, D.C., and throughout southern Maryland when they need help negotiating and litigating child support and alimony agreements.
Maryland Child Support Guidelines
In Maryland, child support is determined using a formula that considers the incomes of both parents, the number of children each parent supports and the number of overnight visits each parent has with children. The court may deviate upward or downward from the formula based on the following factors:
- Who pays for health insurance, day care or college
- Extraordinary expenses such as private school tuition or a child’s special needs
- If a parent is paying support for a child from another marriage
